Our Pass It On Series hits the road! We are partnering with the Historic Harlan Museum to bring you a wide range of craft classes! January 13th at 4:30 and 6 pm we begin with block printing. This is FREE workshop offering a class for children at 4:30 pm and adults at 6pm. Participants will walk away from the class with their own unique block print and a series of prints.  We will meet at the Historic Harlan Museum located at 311 E Central Street in Downtown Harlan. SouthArts Series: Stained Glass

Our SouthArts Series returns February 16th as part of our FREE Arts/JAM Mondays! SouthArts meets every Monday from 4:30 to 5:30 for 6 weeks. We kick this 6 week season off with stained glass - a much requested craft! We will be working with stained glass to make mosaics and stained glass pieces. The first 2 weeks will be a mosaic project to get used to handling glass and the last 4 weeks will be a stained glass sun catcher project. We will be working with glass and hot tools. This class is limited to ages 10-18 for safety. SouthArts is followed by supper at 5:30 and our Junior Appalachian Musician program - where students learn to play an instrument.

Wellness Retreat Weekend

The Wellness Weekend Retreat is a sanctuary of holistic health featuring talented workshop hosts guiding participants through various strategies aimed and reconnection and revitalization. We are thrilled to welcome back Joana Amorim, Andrew Ozinskas, and Michelle Bouton - and introduce our newest hosts Paula Swope and Jamie Dickerhoof!  Registration includes all meals, lodging, and workshops.  All spaces, including our dormitory and houses are shared spaces.  You may register for two pre-workshop events: Primoridial Sound Certification with Paula Swope OR B.E.S.T Body/Mind Balance with Jamie Dickerhoof.  These pre-workshop events are an additional charge and have limited space.  After choosing lodging options, registrants will need to choose workshop slots to ensure we have appropriate numbers for each workshop.  If you have any questions, you can contact Kiristen Webb at kiristen@pinemountainsettlementschool.com

Pine Mountain Settlement School Nativity Play

Our Nativity Play is the longest-standing tradition of Pine Mountain Settlement School! The first play was performed in 1913, the year Pine Mountain Settlement School was established. The play was written by Katherine Pettit and Ethel deLong Zande. Originally performed outdoors, the play is a compilation of passages of scripture, hymns, carols and carols. We offer two shows on December 14th:

Doors open at 2:30 pm and the play begins at 3:00 pm to be followed by a reception at Laurel House

South Arts Series: Holiday Baking

Whoever said breakfast is the most important meal of that day definitely forgot about dessert! In the fall series of South Arts, we will bake, pull, stir, boil, and candy traditional Appalachian treats, perfect for the holidays. Join us each Monday as kids will be led how to make a dessert by a visiting chef. The kids will get to taste as we go along and even take some home to share. Some of the desserts we might make include peanut butter pie, pull candy, buckeyes, peanut butter roll, peppermint bark, sugar cookies, and more!

South Arts is part of our FREE Monday Arts/JAM program.  Children are invited to participate in an our South Arts workshop at 4:30, followed by a meal at 5:30.  Beginning at 6 pm, we have our Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) program - children can choose from guitar, fiddle, and banjo.

Holiday Baking begins Monday, November 3rd and continues through December 8th at 4:30 pm in the Draper Building.

South Arts Series: Upcycled Fashion - Create your own Costume

Spooky season will be here before you know it! Have your kids figured out their Halloween costume yet? Join us at Pine Mountain to take what you already have to make something brand new. Together, we will explore textiles and techniques to create a one-of-a-kind Halloween costume. Along the way, we'll learn ways we can fix clothes and make them ours, how to use a sewing machine, and how to create sewing patterns. Bring clothes that don't fit, have holes, or you just don't like: let's give them new life.

Pass It On Series - Paper-Making

Paper-making is a simple process that shows us how to slow down and appreciate the beauty in something we often take for granted. On August 21st, participants will be led through the process of making their own handmade paper from junk mail. We will make pulp from recycled paper, fashion a mould & deckle out of upcycled picture frames, and create sheets of homemade paper that can be used for crafts, journaling, scrapbooking, and bookmaking.

The paper will have to dry overnight, so folks can either come pick it up or come back for September's Pass It On where we will be making books! This is a FREE workshop open to children ages 8 to 17 and adults.

A tradition that reaches back almost to the beginning, Fair Day is an annual event for community, connection, and celebration of our traditions and heritage! We are excited to move Fair Day to August so we can revive the original purpose of Fair Day - to enable folks to share the bounties of their garden and learn techniques, both new and old, to ensure better production on small plots of land dotting the hollers and hillsides of Eastern Kentucky. This free dinner series is designed to celebrate, share, and connect with what it means to be Appalachian and how we can mold the narrative of our region by connecting with others. We welcome thinkers and movers to share in a meal, discussion, and craft. Join Appalachian author and small business owner, Mandi Fugate Sheffel as she discusses how place informs identity. Mandi Fugate Sheffel was born and raised in Red Fox, Ky. She is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and is currently the Sycamore Fund Project Coordinator at the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky. Additionally, she owns and operates Read Spotted Newt, an independent bookstore in the coalfields of eastern Kentucky. Her personal essays and opinion pieces can be found in Still: The Journal, Lexington-Herald Leader, and the Courier Journal. Her forthcoming personal essay collection, The Nature of Pain, will be released in 2025 through The University Press of Kentucky.
